Day trips from Stoney Nakoda Resort
The resort sits where Highway 40 leaves the Trans-Canada, so three directions open up from the front door: south into Kananaskis Country, west to Canmore and Banff, and east to Calgary.
Drive times at a glance
Approximate road distances and times from the resort in normal traffic, from an online route planner in October 2026. Winter conditions, construction and summer weekends can add a lot.
| Destination | Route | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kananaskis Village | Hwy 40 south | 27 km | about 23 min |
| Canmore | Hwy 1 west | 31 km | about 24 min |

South: Kananaskis Country
Highway 40, the Kananaskis Trail, starts at the roundabout outside the resort. Barrier Lake is the first big viewpoint along it, Kananaskis Village is about 23 minutes away, and the Kananaskis Lakes are further south. Alberta asks visitors who stop in Kananaskis Country to buy a Kananaskis Conservation Pass, so check Alberta Parks before you go.
West: Canmore
Canmore is the nearest town, around 24 minutes west on Highway 1. It is an easy half day: park near Main Street, eat, and walk along the Bow River with the Three Sisters behind you.
West: Banff
Keep going past Canmore and you enter Banff National Park; the town of Banff is about 40 minutes from the resort. You need a Parks Canada pass to stop in the park. Coming back to a hotel outside the park in the evening is one way to avoid the busiest parts of town.
East: Calgary
Downtown Calgary is about 52 minutes east, and the airport about 56 minutes. The resort's own site rounds this to about 45 minutes west of Calgary, which depends on which part of the city you start from.
